Breaking Bad and The Picture of Dorian Gray Connection?????
In the Picture of Dorian Gray, after Dorian murders Basil with a knife, He asks his scientist friend to help him dispose of the corpse. Here Dorian feels no remorse, no pity. He even blackmails Campbell into dissolving the body of Basil for him.
This really reminded me of the scene in Breaking Bad where they needed to dissolve a body in order to cover up evidence. I think there is a connection to be made between Breaking Bad and the Picture of Dorian Gray with characters of Walter White and Dorian Gray.
While these are drastically different situations, they both hinge on the fact that both characters need to dissolve these bodies to cover up their crimes.
There is somewhat of a connection between Dorian Gray and Walter White throughout both of their arcs. They both become corrupted by something that was good. Walter White originally committed al of his crimes in the name of his family. He sold meth so he could leave money for his wife and son before he died of lung cancer. Dorian Gray wanted to maintain his youth and stay "innocent."
Soon they were corrupted by the very things they wanted to obtain. Walter soon lost the vision of his family. His pride and greed took over and instead of a desperate man wanting money for his family, he was a murderous psychopath who would even hurt his closest friends to get what he wanted.
Dorian Gray's corruption came from material possessions and satisfaction. His greed for pleasure caused his soul to rot. Even bringing him to kill a dear friend.
Another connection between these characters actually come up in a scene in Breaking Bad when Walt punches a paper dispenser and looks at himself through reflection. At this point, Walt has been corrupted by greed. The dispenser is warped showing a disfigured version of Walt in its reflection. This is a clear allusion to the Picture of Dorian. While Walt appears like a normal recovering from lung cancer, he is actually a drug lord with no morals.
Was this blog post an excuse to watch breaking bad?
Maybe
I really liked the connections that you made! The reflecting dispenser that shows the reality of his corrupted soul was especially interesting as it connects really well to the painting of Dorian Gray. Your analysis made me realize how both stories are telling us about the corruption of power and the greed of a man. Great work!
