  This podcast really gave me a new perspective on how segregation and its effects are still prevalent today. As a country we cannot just say that we made segregation illegal so therefore racism is solved. It is not that simple. Many of these school systems are still trying to segregate these poorer lack children. I think it's very interesting that they are segregating these school systems off when education is the best way to get out of a bad environment. If we want to fix racism and inequality in this country, we need to provide everyone with a quality education. This podcast helped understand why it is so hard for poor black Americans to get out of these lower quality neighborhoods. From the poor schools to the violence, it almost seems impossible to do that. I talked much about poor housing and job opportunities for African Americans in my last blog post and much of what happens with them happens with education. In the Raisin in the Sun, we see the effects of slavery and segregation in America . The Younger’s are one of many poor African American families. They are an example of how slavery still affects us today despite it occurring almost 160 years ago. Many argue that since there is no law or bill currently that infringes on the freedom of African Americans that the effects of slavery and racism are gone, but this is far from the truth. When slavery "ended", many African Americans were not truly free. The United States prison system, founded in 1891, was created to make those who were in debt are who " committed " crimes do manual labor for the government with no pay. And since African Americans could not find real jobs since no white man would want to hire them, they would either build up debt and return to their plantation or steal to live, making these prisons disproportionally African American.
