Educational Segregation is a big problem
This podcast really gave me a new perspective on how segregation and its effects are still prevalent today. As a country we cannot just say that we made segregation illegal so therefore racism is solved. It is not that simple. Many of these school systems are still trying to segregate these poorer lack children. I think it's very interesting that they are segregating these school systems off when education is the best way to get out of a bad environment. If we want to fix racism and inequality in this country, we need to provide everyone with a quality education. This podcast helped understand why it is so hard for poor black Americans to get out of these lower quality neighborhoods. From the poor schools to the violence, it almost seems impossible to do that. I talked much about poor housing and job opportunities for African Americans in my last blog post and much of what happens with them happens with education. I think it's almost comical that education is for kids to learn, but many parents and school faculty are scared of the school getting lower grades when the new district comes. This is not about grades. It’s about children getting the right to education. We need to provide good education to these poorer areas or allow these kids to go into better schools. I also thought it was interesting that one lady said that it was not a race problem when it clearly was. The school was trying almost everything in its power to keep them from coming. One man suggested starting school earlier so they would need to get up even earlier making it unappealing. Segregation is still alive because black people who lived in these poorer areas before are still there and there has been little progress in terms of improving their quality of life. Segregating these children will only make the problem worse. There are still many problems with racial inequality in America and education is just one of them.
I really like how you integrated certain quotes from the town hall meeting into your blog post. It's atrocious having to listen to the parents describe why racial segregation in schools is necessary. Like you said, education in America is only one small part of the issue at large, and in order to target the issue, changes must be made at the local level.
