SCHOOL IS WEIRD
In class, we read about the mysterious Nacirema. It displayed the absurdity that this “foreign civilization” went about their daily lives, but in reality it was just to point out the absurd things that we do in American Society. I noticed that many people complained about school in their creative writing. After this horrible week of tests, competitions, more tests, and stress, I will now take this chance to complain about school as well and why I think it is weird the way we do it.
I think the concept of school is kind of weird. You have to go to a place to learn topics that will ultimately have no use or application to your real life. And sure you should be literate and know basic math, but do you really need to know the approximate series of the function e^x or know how to get the sophistication point on an essay? No. People will just take hard classes just for the sake of taking hard classes or to make it look good on their college apps. People do not even learn the material to learn the material. They do it so that they can get a high grade. Like right now, sure, I am having a bit of fun writing this blog, but would I be writing if my grade was not on the line. Probably not. I’ve heard the phrase “Is this going to be on the test?” in almost every class I’ve been in. The fact that anything not on the test is irrelevant and can be ignored by the student shows how students are really just going through the motions when it comes to these classes.
But I admit; It’s true that in high school you should take a wide variety of classes - even if they are useless - to know what you like because you're still young, but is the information you learn in classes helpful in college? No, not really. You learn basically 90% of the skills you need on the job. You took all of these classes and did all these internships just to say that you did it. And the employers will accept you over some guy who did not do all of that even though both of you are equally unqualified for the job (Obviously this is not the case for every job, I’m just making a broad generalization). Even your major does not matter. My dad majored in accounting, but is he an accountant? No, he's a software engineer. And even though my mom majored in accounting as well and she is an accountant, how much of her knowledge from college does she say she applies to her daily work? Close to none of it.
My point is that I feel like it's somewhat wasteful to spend so many resources to teach students all of these things just for them to never use it in their job, but I’m no education expert so I don't really have an alternative to this. I mean there are great things about school as well. Like the fact you get to go to a place with people similar age as you is pretty nice. I also like doing sports, after school activities, and school spirit and community. Maybe the education system right now is the best one for us even if it is flawed.
NOW ENJOY MY DRONE SHOTS OF SCHOOL
Hey Jeffery! I like the perspectives you take in this blog. Mostly the blogs that I’ve seen about mocking certain American cultures have only been one sided and that it is to highlight all the flaws. You however understand both the advantages and disadvantages and that makes the blog a lot more sophisticated.
