Is being super rich worth it?
In the story, “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz” a great theme is wealth. But despite being filthy rich, the Washingtons are trapped in that mountain range. And unlike the rich in the Great Gatsby, they are not able to show their rich's off. They are almost slaves to their own wealth. Prisoners on that mountain. And while they live such a bountiful lifestyle, it doesn’t seem too hard to ruin it. Braddock Washington has to go great lengths in order to keep his wealth safe. From shooting down planes and making sure his slaves and workers are restrained, he has to work extremely hard to keep the secret of the diamond. It almost begs the question: is it worth being that rich? When you have to keep your rich safe and barely use it, is it still worth it? The Washingtons have to also make sure that any visitors that they have are exterminated before the summer ends. This obviously would take a toll on the mental health of everyone who lives there. It teaches them to not have attachments to other people. They also will see other humans as indispensable. For example, after telling John that he was going to die, Kismine stated that “It’s only natural for [them] to get all the pleasure out of [the visitors] that [she] can first”(100). SHe even treats other humans as objects for pleasure. The inhumanity of the Washingtons and the lengths they go to shield their wealth show how they are slaves to money and power and do not have true freedom.
I agree with the relevance of these questions Jeffery, and the reasoning is great!! However, I do think the Washington's were not restricted to "barely using [their riches]." They built a magnificent house above beautiful scenery with the most luxurious commodities. And psychologically, the slaves and imprisoned people seemed to have almost no burden on Mr. Washington. But, we know that materialistic values and happiness from it isn't true happiness. So I think the emotional difference between the rich and the poor is what would distinguish if being super rich is worth it.
